What are Led Screens used for?

Meaning of Led Screens:  Led screens or led walls  are large screens made of light emitting diodes to display video and other visual content like a computer monitor  . As the word is said in English, when you look at it, it feels like a solid, luminous wall that allows you to cover it with videos, digitize any space in continuity, without any connection between the modules and cabinets that make up it. In its narrow sense, the word “led wall” is normally used in scenography and (television, virtual, production) studios  or wherever the screen is shot with professional cameras  But now the name has been expanded to cover all applications such as led displays or led displays. not only for indoors but also for outdoors, for example for digital billboards  .

How to choose the best led wall  ?

On the market  ,  IP protection rating (30 to 68), brightness (600 to 15,000 NIT)  ,  consumption (300 to 1000 W/m2), LED type (SMD or DIP) and size (1010') to 3535), refresh rate (from 1920 to over 3840 hZ), maintenance access (front and/or rear) and pixel pitch (0.7 to 50 mm) and overall size (standard or customizable) )  . To choose the right LED video wall model,  you should trust an expert and experienced supplier such as MacroPix. can support the customer in choosing the most suitable technically and commercially, because the price varies a lot depending on the specifications, and they depend heavily on where you want to install and on the communication requirements.

The basic question to be answered in this context is: Should the LED wall  be installed  indoors, outdoors or behind a glass window ? If so,  what is the exposure (north, south, west, east)? Once this is determined, it is necessary to understand  whether there are limitations on the available space or weight or power supply,  and whether the led wall can be mounted on a wall, roof, ceiling, floor, self-supporting structure   or by hanging.

Other features that can identify the best LED video wall models are:  Viewing the product from the MINIMUM and MAXIMUM distance? What kind of visual content will be shown (video, photo, text)? Who is the target or typical user of the message?

Main features of Led Walls

The main technical feature to know about LED video walls  is the "pixel pitch"  i.e. the distance between adjacent pixels, each consisting of 3 LEDs, red, green and blue (RGB). The closer the pixels are, the narrower the pixel pitch, the sharper you will get with the product. With technological advances in recent years, especially with the miniaturization of electronic components, pixel pitches can now be less than a millimeter, thus close to other video solutions such as LCD or OLED (although they never reach the same size and they do not have the same lifetime and flexibility as LED displays).

Difference between SMD or DIP LEDs

DIP technology uses cylindrical LEDs welded to printed circuit boards, ending in a hemispherical dome with a lens to maximize light intensity. Each LED can produce only one color and therefore three separate RGB LEDs (red, green and blue) are used in a triangle shape. This technology is still used for large outdoor installations. SMD technology still uses three small diodes (the usual red, green and blue RGB) but all three are housed in a single square capsule and welded onto the printed circuit board. With this "all-in-one" solution, a shorter distance between individual pixels is guaranteed and the main advantage is to achieve higher resolutions, which means clearer images at a shorter viewing distance.

Visual resolution and definition of led walls

The definition of led walls  is given by the distance between diodes or pixels or their pitch or spacing  The closer the pixels are to each other, the higher the resolution, the closer you will be able to see the screen, and the less need to enlarge the screen size to achieve quality. MacroPix designs, supplies and approves models ranging from 0.7 mm pixel pitch for indoor to 50 mm or larger outdoor pixel pitch. The most popular models of led displays are 1.9mm, 2.6mm and 3.9mm for indoor, 4.8mm, 6.67mm and 10mm for outdoor but many more solutions are available. The trend in the market is to move towards narrower and narrower pixel pitches so 1.2 and 1.5mm for indoor and 2.6, 3.1 and 3.9mm for outdoor have already been successfully installed and more are coming soon

Pixel pitch of led walls

The distance  between individual LEDs, expressed in mm,  is called a step  . This parameter  is fundamental to the selection and location of a particular LED wall, as it determines the graphics resolution and the distance at which the LED wall is clearly visible. To put it simply, if you're considering placing a large tens of square meter LED screen on the roof of a building to convey standard advertising messages, 10mm or more of pitch may be fine. On the other hand, if you intend to install a few square meters of LED display in an indoor area to display live or pre-recorded video up to 4K resolution and more, then a very narrow screen pitch between 1.2 and 1.9mm is recommended.
